The hottest new trend to hit smartphones over the past two weeks is PokémonGo. What is it that is making this app so cool? People are taking to the streets, the open spaces – you name it – in droves.

PokémonGo is an app for iOS (iPhone) and Android-powered phones, and uses the built-in GPS and camera technology to help you hunt and collect Pokémon characters in the real world.

The game has become so popular in the past two weeks, that the servers have not been able to keep up with the demand.

Talking about the technology: you have a real-world environment seen through your camera, supplemented by computer-generated input. In addition, there is the use of GPS, maps and open-data which is big in the technology scene.

In the days and weeks to come, there are plans in the works to release a wearable device to alert players of nearby Pokémon.
